Trophic ecology drives trace element concentrations in the Antarctic octopod community

چکیده
Despite the Antarctic Ocean being considered a pristine environment, elevated trace element concentrations have been reported in many marine organisms. The is particularly vulnerable to climate change, which can also affect bioaccumulation of biota. While octopods are key components regional food webs as prey for variety predators (e.g., seals, fish, and seabirds), their contamination state by elements remains largely unknown. This study investigated relation trophic ecology octopods. Stable isotope values (?13C ?15N) (Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, V, Zn) were measured eight different species (Adelieledone polymorpha, Pareledone aequipapillae, P. albimaculata, aurata, charcoti, cornuta, felix, turqueti) sampled near Elephant Island, close Peninsula. isotopes ?15N varied among species, with significant differences between A. polymorpha aurata suggesting potential niche segregation. Trace differed sampling depth, likely reflects ecology. data presented this provides first insight into these endemic habitat stable values.

Trophic ecology of seven Antarctic gorgonian species
The trophic ecology of Antarctic anthozoans and their role in benthic−pelagic coupling processes is poorly understood. We studied 7 gorgonian species (Primnoisis sp., Fannyella nodosa, Ainigmaptilon antarcticum, Notisis sp., Primnoella sp., Dasystenella sp. and Thouarella sp.) in 2 Antarctic regions: the Eastern Weddell Sea and the Bransfield Strait (Antarctic Peninsula) in austral autumn 2000,...

متن کاملCoastal Upwelling Drives Intertidal Assemblage Structure and Trophic Ecology
Similar environmental driving forces can produce similarity among geographically distant ecosystems. Coastal oceanic upwelling, for example, has been associated with elevated biomass and abundance patterns of certain functional groups, e.g., corticated macroalgae. In the upwelling system of Northern Chile, we examined measures of intertidal macrobenthic composition, structure and trophic ecolog...
متن کاملEco-Evolutionary Trophic Dynamics: Loss of Top Predators Drives Trophic Evolution and Ecology of Prey
Ecosystems are being altered on a global scale by the extirpation of top predators. The ecological effects of predator removal have been investigated widely; however, predator removal can also change natural selection acting on prey, resulting in contemporary evolution. Here we tested the role of predator removal on the contemporary evolution of trophic traits in prey. We utilized a historical ...
متن کاملTrace element trophic transfer in aquatic organisms: a critique of the kinetic model approach.
The bioaccumulation of trace elements in aquatic organisms can be described with a kinetic model that includes linear expressions for uptake and elimination from dissolved and dietary sources. Within this model, trace element trophic transfer is described by four parameters: the weight-specific ingestion rate (IR); the assimilation efficiency (AE); the physiological loss rate constant (ke); and...
